I was looking at doing a Modern Regularity when my Supra first landed, these are the prices i worked out:

$97 for the Mod Reg
$40something day/$80something year CAMS Licence
$40-60 Membership to a CAMS Affiliated Club: Austin 7 Club, Club PSI, SCCSA etc
$40 Fire extinguisher can be bought from kmart/big w and the likes
$5 Battery sticker can be had from Revolution Racegear on Main North Road
$5 Tow Sticker, as above
$xxx Helmet
$15 for a length of chain and 2 buckles, one to attach to the bonnet the other to attach to your rad support or similar. NO your 2 latches will not be enough.

That's all i can think of at the moment. You'll also have the cost of getting there and back which most of you won't have a problem as you'll be driving out, fuel, maintenance before you go and the cost of repairs if you **** something up.

Another point of interest is, with a practice day or a non CAMS Affiliated day you won't get a timed lap because technically it isn't a "speed" event. That is also why such days are cheaper etc...

The next Modern Regularity is the 9th July and i will *hopefully* be heading out.

Cheers,
Jon

Hello, boys & girls.

I thought I should let you all know that I am in the final stages of organising a private track day at Mallala on Thursday 2 November 2006 with the John Bowe Institute of Driving (JBID) team for predominantly jap import cars.

With the limited spots that are available to me, i would like to invite members of the SA Supra Club along to drive their cars on the track at full tilt (or whatever you're comfortable with). At this stage, i can only invite half a dozen Supra Club members as places are limited. If more spots become available, i will let you all know.

The cost to the general public for their High Performance Driving Course is $385, but i have negotiated with JBID to be below $350 (TBA) per person for our group.

This supervised closed course is run by John Bowe's instructor team and in summary is:
* a structured and organised day (0830am to 1630pm)
* instructor led (ratio 1:4 instructor:drivers)
* relatively safe unless you're really stupid
* but no insurance cover for damaging your car (you participate at your own risk)
* there will be an ambulance crew there and a doctor nearby (just in case)
* you will need to bring your own (approved) helmet
* metal valve caps for tire valves is required
* fire extinguisher fitment is optional
* 0800am registration, cars are scrutineered from 0830
* morning tea/coffee and lunch is provided
* lots of bottled water to rehydrate also provided
* unfortunately no spectators are allowed (yet)

There is a morning theory session and a track walk through before the warm up and practice laps begin. Your assigned instructor will ride with you and critique your driving technique before swapping over and showing you how it's done in your car. You will then have the opportunity to bang out instructor timed laps throughout the day with further observation & instruction to gauge your level of improvement.

This is a supervised circuit day with strict and specific rules. It is not a race session, nor is it a drift day. Overtaking on corners is not allowed. Definitely no contact with another car's bodywork! Everyone has the opportunity to go at their own pace for the Time Attack.

I will be most impressed if you are able to hit 200+kph on the back straight of Mallala in a Supra and not spear off at the first hairpin.

JBID normally requires participants to have done a Level 1 course such as a Drive to Live / Drive to Survive day prior to doing this High Performance course. However, i have yet to clarify this. If you have regularly done spirited driving through the hills then this course should be fine for you.

a CAMS licence is NOT required.

Everyone has varying levels of track experience, but we're all out there to improve our skills and learn something new about our cars.

John Bowe Institute of Driving event calendar:
* Monday Oct 30 Ford FPV customer day
* Tuesday Oct 31 Ford FPV customer day
* Wednesday Nov 1 High Performance Driving Course (public)
* Thursday Nov 2 High Performance import track day (us)

Please let me know on this thread (or PM me) by Monday 12-June (Queen's Birthday public holiday) if you are interested. I will update the post to reflect the level of interest. Please do not register your intent if there is a high chance that you may bail out a month before the event - this will affect numbers and may jeopardize the event for the rest of us, especially those who have to organise a day off work, holidays or roster changes. If you think that a friend may also be interested in participating, you will need to be fairly definitive with their committment.

Hope to hear from you all soon!

Cheers,

ultra_supra

PS - spotted red mkiv with black bonnet and chrome rims turning on Cibo Rundle corner ~6:30pm on Monday night (supasupra?) and yiros parked on Frome St ~6:30pm tonight :D

ultra_supra, thank you VERY much for going to all the trouble of organising this event for the club. I think I can speak for us all and say that we appreciate your efforts very much.

It sounds like a really fantastic opportunity to test our cars in a safe and controlled environment! Would definitely be a great experiance :D

On a different note, though, seeing as places are limited, would I be out of place in saying that available positions for the day should be initially limited to Financial Club Members only? Then, if these positions are not filled, the remaining positions could be offered up to the rest of the forum members?

Anyway, thanks again! :thanku: :claps:

P.S. Would be really, really nice to be able to have spectators come along too ;) *wishes*

hmm so interested

but how good would it be to have the whole track to the club???

then some people go for the drift run,

then top speed runs.....

I hate when some one else drives my car..... even when im in it???

Dont know why so much.........

so i would be keen for a day out there.... just not with the

( This supervised closed course is run by John Bowe's instructor team )

but thats only my opinion!!!!!!

why dont we organise to go there and use other clubs say like (nissan silvia)

to help pay for the track ... i.e. we pay $20

say they pay $30...

make it our day and they are invited????

a track day aye, sounds good. At this stage i would be prefering an AIR or mallala track day i dont like the idea of having the intructors/supervisors but thats just me.

Note me down for a registration of interest for the Mallala days etc ;) im keen to bet here

Doesnt Mallala hire out the track to people already? and I know you organised a driving instructor coarse but as mentioned above, I would much rather go out there and do abit of drift and also grip without someone next to me (I went and did the vb commy race day thing, good fun!)
I also know AIR hires out the track for not much aswell as me and some mates are heading out there when the weather gets better and all our cars are fixed.
Just a few extra ideas.

Im keen on spectating the JBID thats for sure.

Hi Ultra,

I am very interested in such an event. Sounds like an excellent opportunity to get some honest feedback and advice on skill levels/ setup etc. I have had a long history of racing around the hillls on bikes against all and sundry but would love to tune up my knowledge and skills on 4 wheels. Please count me in - I would love to come along. Will be interesting to see what the weapon can do.

2 questions though - do we have to supply our own helmets & more interestingly ... what happens if an instructor bins our car? Surely we would be covered then yeah?

Actually also, is there a level 1 course in the interim we can do to tune up? Can you please point me in the direction of more information in this regard. Always happy to learn better technique and discipline behind the wheel!

Ta mate, excellent work,
Gaven

If you want abit of fun to the "trackskill" event in th vb commys before you head out in your own car, it teaches you all the lines and techniques to get around lala. plus you get to thrash their crappy commonwhores. Just dont do it on a 43 degree heat day that was bad!!!

Although I am coordinating this event with the John Bowe team, i would defer to the SA Supra Club management & admin team for organising the Supra contingent. However, i will reserve the right to have the final say in terms of invitations to this track day.

I agree that it would be preferable to have the six positions initially limited to Financial Members, with the remainder available to the rest of the forum thereafter. The good news is that there will also be a waitlist for last minute swaps into the main group due to unavoidable cancellations / sick leave.

I've paid my membership and haven't yet attended a club event as an official member, but this sort of event should be what financial membership entitles you to. So to all those out there who haven't paid up yet - support the the club and send that form in! Better send in your cheque to the club treasurer to become financial, IcE. ;)

It's a difficult proposal for the JBID team, but i'm working on it. Probably not though. We have had a camera man out there taking photos last time (Steve from Steve-O Imagery) so we could have an approved "film crew"...

That's a great idea, but if you can do it, please let me know as i've been trying to organise such a club day for months. As i understand it, you can hire out Mallala for $2500-$3000 per day and that includes the presence of the ambulance crew. However, there are the issues with public liability insurance to consider (ie. who is liable if someone slips over in the public toilets and fractures a wrist? or dives off into a sandbar and ends up with spinal injuries...)

There are also questions regarding the direction of such an event. Do we have enough people willing to be track marshalls and traffic coordinators for the day? Most of the guys that i run with would rather be driving on the track than off it directing cars. More than 20 cars at a time on the track is pretty tight.

I'd rather run a track day with less instructors persent, but that magic day still eludes me.

Any ideas from the club administrators or rest of this forum?

In terms of top speed runs, the circuit is a short course, so you'll run out of track pretty quickly if you're chasing 200+kph. You could hit 200kph on the back straight, but then you have that 2nd gear hairpin to contend with at the end... Hope you have good brakes! AIR is probably better for top speed stretches as you have a run off there, not sand.

[reaper] wrote:

Yes, you'll have to bring your own approved helmet (full face or open).
They make u sign a loss and damage waiver at registration, so it would be extremely bad luck if that happens. Not that it happened to a new Porsche owner in the past... :o

Shannons and other agencies will not cover you on track days. Not even at CAMS events from what i hear.

More reason to have our cars freshly serviced and certified before we go out there to reduce the chance of mechanical failure.

A few companies offer such one day certified courses (Trackskill, John Bowe, Drive to Live). I think that they are worth attending and not just for performance car drivers - definitely worthwhile for family and less experienced drivers. I will send u the details when i can find them.

Have a great long weekend all!

Cheers,

Kim (ultra_supra)

The trackskill day was fun, and its fairly relaxed. You get put in a room for 2+hrs and described how to take corners, accelerating, braking, and just general car info. In here you also get into ur race suit and helmet. from this they take you over to the cars where you get to sit in the car, and more briefing on how it will be run. Then its time to do some racing, the instructor sits next to you and continously tells you where to improve your driving. groups are of 4 people and you share the time in the car which is about 3 or 4 laps at a time. Theres a fair bit of emphasis on the lock diffs making it easier to spin but i found it hard to even get those gutless cars to step out! you hit turn one doing about 130+km/h and you have to clip the curb so it gets abit light on the driver side, great fun! You get a few timed laps before you break for lunch.
I did a 1:41 which wasnt too bad as a group of people who also went out raced there already and pulled 1:38's. It was a hot day (43 degrees which made my forehead into a waterfall!) when i went there so the cars were vapourising like crazy which wasnt fun so i recommend trying to get a cooler time. After lunch you get to do some "actual" racing were everyone gets to do 3 laps and then a driver change.
Its a good introduction to racing i felt and would do it again if I had the chance.

I dont see how JBID would have issues with spectators in the stands as the trackskill day i went to didnt have an issue with anyone being out there watching.

Ok guys,

The closing date for registration of interest for the Mallala track day that i have organised is this Sunday (June 18). Actually, i had extended it from June 12 as i was away interstate and everyone was busy with the long weekend / World Cup.

The list of interested drivers to date includes:
Reaper
Spence?
IcE?

I note the overwhelming silence from the core group of SA Supra forum posters. Unfortunately, i have to say that i'm a little disappointed at the lack of group interest so far. Anyone from the Admin group interested? :(

Apart from the SA Supra contingent listed above, the cars that i have on my main list so far include Integras, WRXs, and S15's. We might even have a new V35 Skyline Coupe out there on the day.

Anyway, i'd love to see some Supras out there on the track to give the Honda, Subie and Nissan drivers a good run!! :aggressive:

Hear from you all soon!

Cheers - Kim

watch out for my friends Black R32 GTR. Not sure if he will be running semi slicks or road tyres.

I am sure reaper will give him a beat him on a roll but not off the mark or around corners. His car hurts my stomach when he accelerates...

Who is that? i thought i knew everyone who was attending, given that i'm organising the day... perhaps it's that Adelaidean two degrees of separation.

Unfortunately I have to say that while I am a car enthusiast, my work comes first. This event falls at a bad time for me, hence my silence.

In light of what I said, I think I speak on behalf of all of the club when I say we really appreciate the effort that you have gone to, to inform and update us, as well as organise a large part.

Effort like that does not go unappreciated.

Thanks again.

Fair enough, work comes first for most of us. I've just organised my annual leave around a track day ;-)

Sorry to hear about the licence, Stikasupra.

I have to say that organising an epic like this is not without its stress, but hopefully the end result will be great satisfaction for all those who make it there!

When i did this in March, we had thirteen cars from our group on the track, but had to concede the rest of the places to the Ford FPV and Porsche guys. This time i want to the import contingent to be bigger and better than before. Euro cars are welcome of course...
