Hey People,

I was wondering if anyone could post some pics of the factory sub enclosure. I am considering installing a sub and I wouldn't mind knowing what the factory enclosure was like. If they are any good, then I will considering trying to locate one to buy or get something made up to match.

Cheers

Andrew

Are you talking about that thing in the middle of the boot that looks like a 6x9??

If so, I wouldn't bother mate - woudn't get anything worthwhile out of that...

I don't know. I have never seen it. Is the factory sub any good? I heard the factory premium setup in Gav’s GZ a few years ago and it sounded decent from memory.

Personally, no its not. It is a paper coned 6x9 basically (piss easy to blow up) - produces so little bass, it just like another speaker in the car. Thus, I have disconnected mine and sat a sub box over the top of it.

Plus, I'm sure finding something to fit and produce decent bass would cost an arm and a leg (and if for example, a 6x9 were to fit in there, they wouldnt sell only one).

Havent you got one in your MKIV??

I don't have one. My car came with an aftermarket double din pioneer cd and tape player with a cd changer. I am not sure what is had from factory. I don't have the amp under the front seat either so it has either been removed or it was never there to begin with.

I didn't even realise that thing in the back was a factory sub until Gav pointed it out to me. Its still in the car just not hooked up to aftermarket unit. I got a JVC head unit with 3 inch monitor and focal speakers front and rear plus tweaters and small amp under drivers seat. Sound clarity is awesome but really want/need a sub. Once I put in the rear bar I'll pay Tonkins another visit and do a custom fit for the sub.
Anyways the stock system was very good for age, only left speaker was no good. I was shocked at how small these speakers were when they showed me. The foam was completely eaten away, I was surprised the right front speaker was still playing okay. It looked just as bad as the dodgey left one.
I wouldn't go with a stock sub and an aftermarket unit as I don't think it would last very long and it creates more mid bass then anything else.

Yeah please go to Tonkins let them give you a quote then come past and see me. Make sure you ask them how they will do the job and what they are quoting on. Please get a written quote while doing it.

The business might be new but i am definitely not. I have been in the industry for a long time and i am sure i can tackle a custom fit of any size.

I currently have a custom job in progress on a 1992 RX7, full custom doors and boot.

George

Get a quote but I wouldn't go there. Just ask TEFE. I went there just before Christmas to look at some speakers. The sales guy didn't really impress me with advise on speakers. I ended up settling on some DLS speaker I purchased elsewhere as the guy was in tune with what I was after.

Give George a go. He knows his stuff and he will give each and everyone what we want not want he wants to sell us.

I second the motion of the ocean - get a quote and then go see a non-mass-market shop that will do a good job. Years ago I had some bad experiences (eg. short circuits, slap dash work) with the "T" place. Them and another place "C.. A.." (prev. owners now though) so I do all my own work now - just like on the car. Fibreglass mounts, fully sealed doors, all electrical, box construction (except for this last box - moulded magic box from MR GZ), system design ie. actually reading things like frequency response curves & Thiele Small specs so as to match musical requirements. As with car spannering you know what's going on & take a greater level of care with the install.

Andy, I've actually got the sub out of the car in the shed at the mo? You may have lost interest by now but I can take a pic of it if you want? Phil's right - heap of siht by today's standards, maybe back in 93 for an OEM sys it was acceptable?

Cya,
Gav

PS- with all this ICE interest maybe we should have a club sound off? SPL & SQ?

I dealt with store manager in Salisbury, nice bloke quite informative too. I really need to put in the rear bar and try and save up some more money before I venture further. Does anyone know how vital those caps with the insulation foam (located above the suspension) are? If I can take them out and just put the bar in, it will save me a bit of stuffing around with nut and bolts and cutting.

:offtopic: I finally put my headlights back together. I ended up painting the yellow bits silver/chrome. They turned out rather well. While I had the lenses off, I took them to SAS and got them polished. My factory plastic headlights will rival the Euros. I will post pics when I finally install them on the car.

Hey Thirsty,

You know when we trial fitted it but found the nuts weren't suitable etc. That black plastic trim over the metal caps is held in place by the caps. If you ditch the caps you'll have the trim waving around the joint.

Cheers dude, when are we going for that aero cruise?

Gav
