i love bass and what some!

sure the boot is small but surely someone has got a sub in the boot?

at tonkins a guy was telling me that he recently did a custom install to a black supra with 2 subs facing upwards and two amps closer to rear. apparently it went hard "in all sense of the word" only problem to me is that his spare tyre and tool kit aint ever going to see light of day again.

anyone got a sub in a box that is secured but can be removed for access to spare tyre?

and another question, what speakers are in rear? i need to change them, or one of em. and is it possible to remove just the grill without taking heaps of trims out?

fronts are adequete to me. just would like the addition of a sub and no crackling from the driver side rear.

Put it simply: You will need to pull the rear trim out to replace the speakers. From memory they are standard 6inch speakers.

I replaced all my speakers when I bought the car (the previous owner had put in a hi watt deck and blown the stockies).

I have also put a sub and amp in the boot, together with some 6x9's for clarity of sound, running off the amp. Sounds pretty good I guess.

My sub, amp and speakers are all in a custom black carpeted box. It is so heavy that I have not needed to bolt it down at all. And it fits perfectly between the rear struts. So if i need to get to the spare, all i will need to do is:

a. Fold the back seat down,
b. Push back the sub box,
c. Access the tyre etc

Easy, and effective.

Oh, and if you can, do as much of it as you can. It is piss easy to do (I have done ALL of my sound equipment - including headunit). All you need is a few beers, a good wiring diagram, a few tools and about half a day's solid work.

Dont waste your money getting someone else to do it, unless you know that person or you are getting a 'special' deal...

I'd be happy to help out if you need.

i got to sell my car first then i getting the equipment i want. (mitsubishi starion, rego GADGET if u seen it)

i will keep u in mind tho. especialy if u know the ins and outs of taking trims and stuff apart.

i looking at a kenwood or eclipse head unit double din, tv/dvd/mp3/cd thingo, sufficient amp and 12 inch sub

what is this about stock speakers not taking the wattage of the head units? i guess i gona have to look at what others have done and see what it looks like and sounds like.

i was thinking of running just a sub off amp.

just researching now as some deals are popping up before chrissy and i wouldnt mind a present for me :)

My four stockies were also blown.

The rear speakers are rather tough to get out as they are glued (as well as screwed) to the bracket. It isn't hard removing the trim though.

If I were you, I would get a good pair of 6 inch 2-way speakers for the rear and a good set of 5 inch?? mid range speakers for the front (utilise the standard tweeters as I have heard they are a btich to change - I could be wrong).

Wiring of the head units, amps and speakers is a piece of cake. I can also help out if you need an extra set of hands or someone to help drink the beer :D .

The hard part is getting it to sound nice (i.e. setting crossovers, adjusting eq settings and gain etc.) A good friend of mine in Melbourne is an audio engineer and I asked him to set up my sound system in my S3 Commodore. Basically he told me the sound should sound balanced (i.e. not too much of any one frequency). Luckily, my system was very easy to tweak, all he did was reduced the gain to my front and rear speakers and that was it.

I had Tonkins put in a system, Eclipse head unit and Focal speakers, took them all day and charged me $200 for the labour. Now I'm after more bass. I'd like to catch up with Phil or Andrew for a bit of guidence, or anyone else out there in soopland.

The stockies were blown becuase they were a cardboard cone. I do not know of any old cardboard cone speakers that have lasted. The extra wattage blows the siht out of them...

Yiros - yours were glued? Mine werent...

And its 4 inch speakers for the front (if you want it to fit the plastic mould) I have heard you can take that mould out too and fit bigger speakers, but it wasnt worth it IMHO. The fronts for me are just for clarity. Decent 4inch are fine for my needs.

And yes, the standard tweeters are a btich to change - the dash has to come out AFAIK. Not worth it either.

Oh, and the trim isnt really that hard to get out... Just dont force anything cos its all plastic and will break easy (esp at the age of the car). If it wont come out easy, probably because there is still a screw somewhere...

Good luck with it all and let us know if there is anything you need.

Cheers

$200?? Geez! Like I said, a few beers would have been no probs!

I am by no means an expert, but I know enough to get me by. Happy to help when you need Chris. Just call out.

Thanks for the offer,I had the system put in about 8 months ago, before our great club got going. :( But I want more bass, not spot weld shattering but something that makes old school sound the way it should.

Ok. There are a few options available to you.

What would be best would be to see you in person (probably on the next cruise or something), show me your car, I'll show you my setup, and we can discuss from there (budget, expectations, etc)

For that extra bit of bass, I would consider getting the factory sub enclosure and replace the woofer with something a little newer. That way, you minimise the amount of space required and get a decent amount of bass that isn't in your face... (I can’t say I have physically seen the factory sub so I am not sure if this is possible. I have heard the standard system in Gaven’s car and the sound was rather nice…)

I guess it may be difficult in getting a second hand factory sub....

I too am very interested in updating my sound system. Went to Tonkins, I want to get the JVC KD-AVX1 head unit which has a 3 inch monitor in it (approx $900/$1000). They recommended focals 4" at the front and I think 6x9's at the back and an amp (unknown what type and specs). I wanted a sub but they said I'll have to ditch the rear seat or the spare (my car is aerotop). I would prefer to keep them both but if I had to choose I would ditch the spare. I'm not looking at winning any sound off competitions but want something descent. Tonkins said to budget for $2k including installation. Any advise would be appreciated

Like I said in one of my previous posts, I was able to place my sub in the boot AND atill have access to my spare (read it if interested ^^). Thus i think what they said re: backseat or spare is bullshit.

However a sub in the boot would mean you could not take the aerotop roof off and place it in the boot (then again I havent seen how an aerotop fits in the boot).

$2k sounds a bit expensive, but then again, they ARE the experts... and they provide warranty when it stuffs up.

Getting something decent doesnt always involve getting a sub. Need to consider your options.

Hope this helps

PK

Speaking of bass, I just picked up an Audio Pro 400W RMS sub for the house. The sub weighs a massive 19kg. Hopefully the sound is as impressive. I guess I better wait til tomorrow before I try it out :D

A friend from Melbourne hand carried it over tonight. Luckily he was able to check it in to cargo for no additional cost

Actually sorry guys, I wont be able to bring my car to the Dec 11th cruise. I DEFINITELY need to have it off before then, because the 'loan' car I am borrowing has to be back before christmas - so I really need to get started on what I want to do next week.

I am happy to have a chat though.
