Hello everyone,

As some of you may know (those that have seen my post in the new members section), i've purchased my first supra from interstate
and now i (unfortunately) have to take the car in to regency for the usual "i.d check" or so they call it (well technically i won't be doing it, my bf will ;P)
I just wanted to ask you guys/girls for some advice on aftermarket steering wheels and whether or not they are illegal as my car has one fitted as pictured below..

http://i1014.photobucket.com/albums/af263/jeb-jza80/Jeb%20Supra/jebsupra4.jpg

Any advice or comments in regards to this would be super appreciated :D

thanks in advance,
Julie/Jeb

aftermarket steering wheels may not get through Regency due to diameter or if there was an airbag wheel originally fitted.

however, from your other photos, your ride height / suspension might be too low to pass Regency.

go see the club's sponsors - Sinergy (Medindie, Main North Road) or Fours N More (Pooraka, off Bridge Road) and they can tell you what needs to be done to clear the ID check / other inspection.

there are some threads on this site about passing Regency / ID checks - do a quick search to find them.

cheers

ok, thanks alot for that ultra_supra! i'll definitely consider getting a reputable workshops second opinion.
i did manage to get some standard height supra springs in great condition from a supra owner in NSW, for $1 :P
and i will be removing the rear window/quarters tint as it seems too dark for regency standards,
my only other obvious concerns were that the car did not have a spacesaver/spare tyre in the boot,
and that the aftermarket 19x8 inch wheels were possibly too large or what not..
but i have purchased an S14 spacesaver from ebay (which i believe is the same stud pattern), so hopefully that will suffice.

i'll try and find those threads about regency / ID checks that you mentioned.

thanks again ;)

Do you just have lowering springs on the car or coilovers?
If your tint is darker than 25% you'll need to take it off, if not don't worry it will be fine.
The S14 space saver *may* not fit even though stud pattern is the same. I'm not sure what offset the S14 runs, but it may not be as high as the 50 the Supra runs.
19x8 wheels will be fine(assuming they aren't stupid offset and they don't look it), your tyre placard should have the 17" OEM listed as standard

I'm fairly sure that they are just lowered springs on the factory Bilstein shock absorbers.
as for the tint, it looks fairly dark, i have another car that has 20% tint and this looks very similar if not darker.
I'm hoping the s14 space saver fits, if not then at least it will do for the inspection >.< in regards to the wheels,
I was under the impression earlier year Supras came standard with 16 inch wheels and the later models came out with 17's, but i will double check the placard!

Thanks alot ma61turbo! :)

take the car through as is. my ex gf (MADCAT check her members ride) tooke her twin turbo supra through with worn tyres, blow off valve, after market computer, sports steering wheel. big wheels and tyres,

all we did was get fours n more to raise the heigh to look "normal" and change the exhaust to the stock one so it was quiet.

she was in and out in 10-15 mins.

make it look stock height, and sound stock exhaust and you should be fine. if there is a problem they will let you know and you will just have to do a second visit to make sure that only those bits are fixed.

she was lucky. there are some good outcomes (escapes?) but there are also horror stories from the other forums (eg SAU) where they've gone over a car with a fine toothed comb and defected stacks of stuff.

the important thing is to make it look "normal" with a standard-ish ride height. coilovers generally won't pass Regency and some springs on standard suspension (like my previous RS*R super low springs) lower the car way too much to pass attention.

Jeb - good luck with it all and let people know how you went with your experience - feedback is good for everyone.

If you need a Space saver wheel, send me a PM. I have 2 & they are brand new. You just have to pick it up. No charge.

Prety sure N/A A80 came out with 16" standard so see if someone on here has a set you can borrow. I took my car down to sturt Rd cop shop instead of regancy. Might be a better option for ya.

^ correct

but wheel size may no longer be an issue with Regency providing you are close to the original rolling tyre diameter (+/- 12mm i think)

eg. a 255/40R17 rear tire is usually 636mm (Bridgestone Adrenalin)

so as long as your equivalent 19" tire is close to this and not some stupid 205/30R19 liquorice which reduces the overall diameter to 600mm you should be ok. however, 275/30R19 = 649mm is just outside of this so you may or may not get away with it...

you're better off just fitting a stock set of 16" or 17" rims

The rules thingo

The overall diameter of any tyre fitted to a passenger car or passenger car derivative must not be more than 15mm larger or 26mm smaller than that of ANY tyre designated by the vehicle manufacturer for that model.

^ thanks JT :friends:

636 stock + 15mm = 651mm

so a 649mm 275/30R19 is within the limit.

a 205/30R19 (605mm) tire stretched on an 19x8 rim isn't :nonono:

thanks soo much for all the info guys, very helpful!
the tyres on my car now are 235/35 ZR19, but perhaps i may just end up borrowing a stock set of someone just to be safe - what do you think ?
..i wont be taking the car in until a couple of weeks anyways, but i'll keep you all posted on what's happening :)

the 19" rims should be fine with those rims. as long as plenty of tread and not worn past legal limit.
my 19's were measured up when i went through for my engine swap approval. everything was fine. i got either 234 or 245 fronts and 265 or 275 rears
