Hi all,

I am in the process of buying a supra, and have been looking at various insurance providers to cover it.
After looking very thoroughly, i found SGIC will cover me (As a second driver), but only for an agreed value of $7480. Unfortunately this amount will not cover the total car costs, and i will not be fully covered in the occurence of an accident.

I have looked at AAMI, Just Car, Allianz, Budget Direct, ING, You I, CGU, and Shannons, all of which either do not insure a supra, or criteria must be met in order to do so. In order to get my supra insured, i believe that i may have to go to a broker, is this true?

Also, as this is a car club, and if i were to pay the membership fee ($20?), what am i entitled to, and would i have benefits in insuring a supra?

Thanking you,
Jacob

Unfortunately as far as Shannons go it means nothing other than your an enthusiast. Their biggest issue is will your Supra be in a locked garage at night. If not they wont touch anyone.

Best idea get parent to insure car and you be a nominated driver. Wont help you get an insurance history but get your P's over and then worry about that.

What kinda of Supra is it first of all?

AAMI, SGIC, Allianz, all won't cover imported JZA80's, if they quoted you it must have been for an older Australian delivered supra because that agreed value is stupid..

Companies such as Just Cars or Shannons, Or Famous Insurance would be your options for an import, and especially as your on your P's.

I'm assuming that your talking about an A80. Firstly, Just Cars will definitely cover it and anyone. . . So long as you have the cash to pay the premium. . .

Secondly, RAA covered my MA70 import but they wanted 2500 premium for 12000 coverage so I said no and just chose 3rd party. . .

Thirdly, AAMI can get screwed IMO, I'm up for 2k+ excess for my work vehicle that I crashed. . . Don't give them a cent!

Anyways the A80 guys will likely be more help. . .

www.youngandcool.com.au aka Famous Car Insurance will if your 20+ (excess 1000+10%of mods or 2000 if at fault and you haven't done a driving course)

Yes, it will be an 1994 JZA80 (Non Turbo)...and thankyou for your posts.

As for Just Car Insurance, i would not be covered if the supra was under my mothers name, as Just Cars goes by the youngest driver, which means anyone under the age of the nominated driver will not be covered.

As for Shannons, they basically told me and my mother that i could not get car insurance with them, unless i was part of some car club, and that i needed to provide evidence in doing so.

SGIC seems to be the best option yet, but they will only cover me up to $7480, which doesnt even cover the total price of the car. They said that the reason for this is because SGIC go by the domestic value of the car which goes up to the maximum of $7480. ( I guess this must be due to Toyota Australia importing supra's into their dealerships bak in the day?)....

Anyway i guess my best option would be to go see a broker, anyone had any good experiences with a certain broker?

Thanks,
Jacob

hmm that doesn't sound right, last time i tried to call SGIC they wouldn't even cover my imported Soarer or even my old Skyline...as it was an imported car you could not buy in australia.

Why don't you cover the car under your name with Just Cars, not your mums, can't you just insure it under you?

$7480 sounds completely bogus too, redbook.com.au doesn't even mark that as the value i wouldn't think.

well i dont really want to be spending $2462 on insurance a year, and by putting my mum as the owner and me as a second driver...i do save quite abit of money.

I'm with allianz but they are very restrictive (nearly no modifications allowed) and a lil expensive, heard good things about AAMI from --Golli who has his Mk3 with them,

I'm with AAMI, but only 3rd party and fire and theft.
It's under 400 a year, so its ok.
I'll be looking into getting my car fully compo'd in the next month or so once my rebuild is done, hopefully with agreed value.
I'll let you know how I go.

I found as a young driver insuring my supra was a bit hard to do. However, im on my full license. As everyone suggested you cant really go wrong with Just Car, I pay a little over $2,000 which is not bad considering a few other places wanted over $4,000.

When I was on my P's I was with CGU, but I didnt own the supra then. They're really helpful and I found their customer service to be great. Im sure you could get away with your mum paying the insurance and yourself as a nominated driver, it might be a little cheaper than Just Car. But it all depends on the supra, most places wont even touch an import these days.
