Any members here with a 6 speed supra may find this useful. My 6 speed has the usual slight notchy feeling when going from 1-2 and 2-3 gears when the car is cold. Usually i had to wait between 5-10 minutes of driving for the v160 oil to come up to temp and allow the gearbox to shift smoothly.(i found this annoying as most trips only last 10 minutes and it would fark me off in terms of driveability). I bought new v160 fluid for my box and the smoothness improved marginally, telling me the existing oil was probably old. Anyway there is a huge thread on supraforums.com where people rave about royal purple synchromax as an alternative to expensive v160 oil.

check it here: http://www.supraforums.com/forum/showthrea...160+alternative

Anyway, i thought i would try it out. I ordered 3 litres of synchromax for 90 dollars through autobarn which is significantly cheaper than v160 oil! (you only need 2 litres $60 for a oil change, i bought a spare). I must say, the yanks were right, it has made my box smoother. 1-2 gear shift is much smoother and easier when the car is cold and 2-3 shift slips right in whereas before there was a slight notchiness when cold. when the car is up to temp, the shifts are awesome now. I have spare v160 oil so should this RP synchromax deteriorate quickly i can easily switch back. But for now i enjoy driving my 6 speed better than before. It almost feels like the box has more dampening between shifts(hard to explain). I suggest everyone try it out.

Regular v160 oil is regular atf fluid anyway with a flashy container and price! If anyone experiences notchiness when the car is cold or just through regular driving, try it out. I am pretty happy with it and they say it gets better when you have put more kms on the oil.

dont be scared by those myths that alternative oils swell the bushing in the gearbox, that was only found to be true with one particular redline gearbox oil and this is discussed in the thread above. the synchromax was designed for gearboxes which take atf type fluid like the getrag and its newer technology compared to 15 yr old v160 oil.

I believe Redline have recently released an oil specifically for Getrag. All their other are not suitable for use with the V160/1 as pointed out.

Unofficial word on the streets is Castrol Transmaz Z is the alternative to V160 oil…

Im running Castrol Transmax Z as recommended by Getrag themselves. I sent an email ages ago and that was one of about 3 options they suggested. Dont ask what the others were as they were not available in Australia. Unfortunately the reply was lost in a Hard Drive tidy up. I had to get my German brother inlaw to send the email as my English questions never got a reply. So much for English being International standard.

Cheers
Darren

well there you go, another alternative. Basically, to get v160 oil is a rip off and for those who plan to track there car, servicing gearbox oil before and after track days can be expensive if using v160 oil.

how do you find the castrol darren? what did u have in gearbox b4 using it? any difference?

I had V160 before and seemed about the same after as far as use goes except the cold changing seemed to go away faster. One of the problems people have with the Getrag ( difficult selection) can be fixed by replacing the worn selector bushes. I replaced mine with metal bushes which improved the selection of gears dramatically but man its really noisy as they transmit alot of gearbox noisy. Andy has replaced his with Factory bushes so when his Supra is back on the road I will see if his are much quieter. If his are I will get standard bushes fitted. Its an experiment and I was told they might be noisier. Could be some cheap ally bushes coming up.

yeh i read about those and didnt want extra noise. my short shifter is noisy enough. do you have to drop the trans to replace those selector bushes? is it a huge labor job?

i tags the alloy bushes! is mine if they's for sale

in terms of the V160 oil group buy - we got ripped off. http://www.sasupra.com/forum/index.php?s=&...ost&p=33145
Darren and I lost the most amount of money with that one (i lost almost $500). i've learnt that if you want something good, then you're better off getting it yourself! i think i'll order a carton from Japan myself.

when i replaced my V160 gearbox oil (thanks to Yiros for the oil) i wasn't convinced that it made much difference straight away, but as Sam has just described, the smoothness became more apparent over the subsequent weeks and it's fantastic now.

that was the original plan, but Kinway Ken offered us a good deal - it was good until he screwed us over and took off with everyone's money :(

You'll need a hand pump or something similar. There is not enough room to fill via a bottle and the shifter is remote so you can't do it that way.
