Can we organise a track day for SASUPRA only -

looks like we have a far bit of interest from supra members - this year

and also if you didnt have any other non members there

( wankers saying shit - or thinkng there nissan is top shit etc )

members like my self would be able to take our supra out for laps

even though im not set up to racing -

youd prob get more people out there from this club if didnt try to make it

sound like you have to have a 300 rwkw beast to come to track - oil cooler - upgraded brakes -

it be a great experience just be to be on a race track - wouldnt care if not fast -

make it a club day

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

not sure who you're directing this request at but...

I have been trying for the last three years to have an SA Supra only track event, but there simply ISN'T enough interest from people here to run a full track day. if you note, the track day last November was supposed to be an SA Supra day and all we got was 5 supras (incl myself). i had to fill the other spots with people from Nissan Silvia because we just didn't have any interest here.

no, you don't have to have a 300rwkw beast to have fun out on the track. Yiros has demonstrated that with his NA at my track day last year.

everyone complains about the cost of going to the track. the reason why no one can put on a track day just for SA Supra is because of cost and insurance (cost to hire out Mallala is at least $2800/day + ambulance cost + towtruck + public liability insurance if someone falls off the grandstand or slips in the toilet). if someone can address all those issues, provide track marshalls and front up the money, then they should put a track day by all means pronto. the reality is that unless people are prepared to spend a minimum amount of money and put it down on the table instead of hedging their bets, then we will be able to have a club event.

anyway, that's my perspective...

so lets look realistically at the interest from Supra members here:

I am assuming that we have the regulars (ultra_supra, Reaper, Relaxx, Yiros, RZ TT 94) and maybe Darren = six

ma61turbo
Mercury
supralicious
The Old Fart - but only if his car is back on the road by then

that's only 10. we'd need at least 16 drivers to run a private track day and 24 cars to have a cost effective instructor led day ($350-$450pp).

if we're running a private track day, we'd also need CAMS present in addition to paying the general insurance & public liability costs. as a club, we're not CAMS affiliated and are unlikely to attain that status in the near future. money would be needed up front as pay on the day hardly ever succeeds. and someone would need to organise all of this.

case in point: for the recent dyno day, we only had 15 Toyotas on the rollers out of 20 available spots. i ran my Supra twice and i brought in the two Honda's to bolster the numbers in order to keep Morpowa happy. for a Mallala track day, if only 10 Supras turn up instead of 20 who promise to, then everyone's cost will double for that day.

Thanks for writing that up Kim! I'm sure your getting sick of answering those particular complaints about SASupra only track days.

I gotta agree with Kim. I don't see why he should have to put in all the effort (Or whoever else organizes it) to get an SASupra only track day going, only to have it all fall apart on the final hurdle. There has to be some sort of compromise from people willing to put some money and definite interest out before the organizer puts in the effort. Besides, what's so bad about a mixed day? I mean, Supra only would be cool but I think having a bit of variation out there would actually be more fun. Especially when it involves Andy's N/A outstripping turbo S15s, hahah.

I think the upgraded brakes, oil cooler, all that stuff you referred to Stika is all for your own benefit anyways? I mean to say, its stuff that would be recommended to have done to your car so you don't go out on the day and blow up your car on the 2nd lap, wasting the money you paid to get out there in the first place. I don't think its intended to create some sort of elitist group of people who can go to the track and who can't.

Either way, I'm looking forward to getting out there.

Heck bring your missus' hyundai getz out to the track, just come.

You don't need an oil cooler, upgraded radiator, upgraded brakes, stiff hard coilovers etc to come out and have a boot around the track, yeh it helps and will make your car quicker, but its not necessary.

thats exactly the club spirit i like to read - :friends:

well since we are only allowed to go 110km - and of course no one breaks the speedlimit around adelaide-

so bring any car out - but as long as your a supra club member - we can ALL have a good day -

Tom - i want to blow my engine so can go something bigger - LOL

dont like the job, that you put your hand up infront of your peers, and got voted in ... quit then - simple

That's true, but I'm not sure that the motor sports events co-coordinators role specifically entails an effort to put on an purely SASupra only track day, especially considering how hard it is to make it viable? Honestly, I'm just thankful that there is being one offered at all.

I think where stik meister is coming from here is that all of you guys that DO have the big numbers and go to these events, with one or two exceptions, make it sound like that if we have no chance in hell of getting af aster lapt time to not bother rocking up to the vent as we will just get in the way. I have always wanted to do some laps out at Lalla, but everytime it comes up i get put off by some one in the club being a cock fag and demanding that we all drive like fuck wits to try and keep up with him...

Personally, id love to, even if my cars not 100% id still love to give it a bit of stick down the back straight of Malalla.

I seriously think, that if you want more people, you need to do something (re: evict) those that seem to think that this is an official round of the SuperCar series and as such we all have to spend the same as a small privateer team to even think about having our cars out there.

Any who, id like to put my name down, but:

a. the above....
B. doubt ill have the money for it

any who

</rant>

Why would we exclude anyone if we don't have the numbers in the first place? :fool:

i like the job of organising these type of events. but apart from Kevin Costner, there is no point building a baseball field if you don't have a team or players to populate it. there needs to be a viable business case in running these things as it does all cost us time and money. and every year there is only a handful of respondents to the call of going to Mallala.

it IS simple. if you don't have enough people putting their name on the list to make it viable, then the event doesn't happen. much like the process of organising any other event.

i've not discriminated against bringing other makes of car to the track, nor have i discouraged non supra club members from attending recent track days. in fact, i have encouraged anyone and everyone to go out to Mallala to run on the track. that is also why i have canvassed interest for general driver training days so that family and friends can take their cars out to experience hard driving conditions (emergency braking, skid pan, etc)

all my advice re bigger brakes, intercooler, oil cooler, coilovers, tires etc has been to increase the reliability/longevity of your cars out on the track and your potential to have fun. there is no value in blowing your car up and not being able to drive for the rest of the day if you have exceeded its physical limits

healthy debate nonetheless, and this thread allows me to achieve my goal of increasing interest and awareness that we have a track day coming up in November :P

Bah! all you supra guys are slack!. I went out last time in my AE86 and had a ball. I hope the numbers stay low so i can keep filling your vacant spots up :P

But seriously the club events i've been to and looked into, all seem to have the same problem with numbers. So i don't think its just this SAsupra club. The AE86 guys struggle to get more than 10 cars to a cruise let alone a track day.

Anyway, if your car is running and you have the cash there isn't a whole bunch of reasons not to come out. I'll be doing it ruff for next couple of months money wise just to get my car ready! But it really is worth it, the last day Kim organized really was awesome and i hope i can challenge you supra guys a bit better this time round in the new car ;)

your first post here is a bold one, James! ;) but it is good to get an outsider's perspective and to hear that the issues we encounter here in SA Supra aren't entirely unique.

was great to have you & your AE86 out there with us last year, and i look forward to seeing your new machine this year! perhaps you can debut the car at the club dyno day on October 25th?

i'd love to come to the dyno day but im pushing for time and money for the track day as it is. Plus watching a near stock 1JZ pump out won't be anything new for you guys hahahah. A dyno day early 09 is sounding a bit more plausable, hopefully will push some bigger numbers as well.

interested in a track day or the dyno day?

the deposit for Nov 19th trackday (2008 SA Supra trackday) is due at the end of this week, and the club's annual dyno day is october 25th. the 2009 club's dyno days will be in May and October.

Track Day. Can't make the November one though, just posting interest for future events.
