updated August 19 --> next track day will be November 19 (Wednesday)

it's time for our Annual Track Day at Mallala. I have organised another High Performance Driving Course with the John Bowe Institute of Driving for Wednesday November 19. This is an opportunity to put your money where your mouth is and get out on the circuit to cut some hot laps. This is a Level 2 instructor led course which means that you have the opportunity to have a qualified instructor (who is often a professional race car driver) assess your driving ability / technique and teach you new skills (or modify your bad habits). Website here: John Bowe Institute of Driving This is also your chance to drive your car around a race track as fast as you possibly (safely) can.

It is preferable that you have done a Level 1 defensive driving course before, or that you're an experienced driver in the Adelaide Hills. JBID normally requires participants to have done a L1 course such as a Drive to Live / Drive to Survive day prior to doing this High Performance course. However, if you regularly do "spirited driving" through the hills then this course should be fine for you. Everyone has varying levels of track experience, but we're all out there to improve our skills and learn something new about our cars. Traffic light grand prix racers don't count - we're going fast around corners here!

** please note that this is not a race or drift day. it is not a club supersprint event or Time Attack day ** see FAQ post below.

As this is less than three (3) months away, you'd better get your act together if you're interested. Our annual Dyno Day is a month before this (October 18) so there should be no excuses for not having your car ready (unless you blow it up on the dyno... :fool: )

Pricing for the general public is $425 per person (2007/2008), but our group pricing will be $385 per person.

- $100 deposit is due by September 19
- $285 balance of payment is due by October 18 (before Dyno Day)
- the track day is on a Wednesday so you had better organise your holidays/leave/sick day now!

Summary:
------
* 16 places available for SA Supra members
* cost = $385 for whole day (0830-1630) of instructor led training
* deposit = $100 to me (ultra_supra)

* theory session, track walk through, practice laps, then training
* includes morning tea + catered lunch
* lots of bottled water / softdrinks to rehydrate also provided throughout day

* instructor led (ratio 1:4 instructor:drivers)
* relatively safe unless you're really stupid
* but no insurance cover for damaging your car (you participate at your own risk)
* there will be an ambulance crew there and a doctor nearby (just in case)
* you will need to bring your own (approved) helmet
* metal valve caps for tire valves are required
* fire extinguisher fitment is optional

* no drifting
* no spectators
* no passengers other than the instructors
* a CAMS licence is NOT required.

* this is a supervised circuit day with strict and specific rules.
* it is not a race session, nor is it a drift day.
* overtaking on corners or under brakes is not allowed.
* definitely no contact with another car's bodywork!
* everyone has the opportunity to go at their own pace

Frequently Asked Questions:
---------------------------------

Q: Why is this so expensive? I can go out to Mallala for $70-$90 on an open day and go fully sick there
A: Well go ahead and do that then. This is a driver education day. we're paying for the exclusive hire of the track, ambulance crew, instructors, and catering. The JBID days are good from an instruction and safety point of view, but yes, are costly. Our package includes the cost of instructors, ambulance crew and someone to pull you out from the sandtrap with a tow truck. Food and refreshments are included.

The problem with an open day is that you will be sharing it with lots of other cars, drivers who may not have experience in circuit driving (and therefore clog or obstruct the track), drifters (not a bad thing, but they do obstruct traffic), and those who aren't concerned about losing pieces of bodywork or other cars (therefore dangerous). There will be a maximum of 28 cars on our day. Up to 10 cars may be circulating out there at any one time but on different parts of the track so you will have the opportunity to stretch your legs out (you may have to be patient though)

Q: Are spectators allowed to come along watch for the day?
A: Unfortunately, no.

Q: Can i drift my car on this day or Can i race other people for pink slips?
A: No!

Q: Can i take other people around the track in my car?
A: Aside from the instructor, no.

Q: "I'm an ace driver already and don't need any instruction from anyone. i just want to tear up the track and smash the lap record. Why should i listen to an instructor telling me how to drive?"
A: If you're thinking that, then this sort of track day isn't for you. You should stay at home and wait for that phone call from the Formula 1 team that so desperately wants to sign you up for their championship run.

Q: Will i hit the 180kph speed cut in my supra?
A: Quite possibly if you are a hero on the back straight. However, you'll have to back that top speed up with damn good brakes or you'll miss the hairpin corner completely. I will be most impressed if you are able to hit 200+kph on the back straight of Mallala in a Supra and not spear off at the first hairpin.

Q: Doesnt Mallala hire out the track to people already? Why can't SA Supra hire out Mallala for a day?
A: That's a great idea, but if you can do it and pull it off, please let me know as i've been trying to organise such a club day for years. Yes, you can hire out Mallala for $3000-$3500 per day and that includes the presence of the ambulance crew. However, there are the issues with public liability insurance to consider if you have spectators around (ie. who is liable if someone slips over in the public toilets and fractures a wrist? or falls off the grandstand and ends up with spinal injuries...). There are also questions regarding the direction of such an event. Do we have enough people willing to be track marshalls and traffic coordinators for the day?

Q: Can i rock up on the day and borrow a helmet?
A: No. You will need to bring your own as it is a mandatory requirement. No helmet, no go.

Q: Will i be insured if i crash my car? or crash into someone elses car?
A: No insurance company will cover u for damage incurred on a race track, even with a CAMS licence. period. You are required to sign a loss and damage waiver by John Bowe to participate on the day.

Q: I have heard that some insurance companies will cover my for a driver education day - does that apply?
You will have to check with your own insurance company to see if they can cover you for this event. Participation is at your own risk otherwise.

Q: Do i need a CAMS licence for the day?
A: No. this is not a CAMS practice or race event
.

Invitation only? Does this mean newbies with NA's won't be able to come and set the slowest lap times... ?

I'm in fo sho - gotsta get my shit quick!!

These days are bloody awesome fun, seriously - I'm not just saying that for PR.
If you're insured with Shannons you can go hell for leather because you are covered for instructor lead track days = fang city!!

So it sounds like Me, Kim, Andy, Relaxx, Matty and I reckon Darren will join the usual suspects from this year onwards too.

Generally everyone is welcome to attend these track day events but Kim has a hell of a lot of friends and so some years not everyone can be accomodated. Having said that, last year it was thrown open to NS.com etc. just to fill the books.

My advice - if you want to get on early is to voice your interest to Kim and be solid about it ie. reliable, book/pay on time etc.

We routinely go to the pub for tea after these events to discuss the shenanigans too.
Fantastic, wouldn't miss it for the world.

GEE :D :D

by definition it is an invited event as it's not an Open Practice Day like some people have assumed in the past. the John Bowe Institute of Driving books Mallala for several days and they allocate me one of those days that i fill with drivers that i invite.

as Reaper has pointed out, this annual day has traditionally been filled with my non-Supra driving friends and associates. last year i tried to make it a Supra-only day and all we got was five Supras (Reaper, Yiros, RZ TT 94, Relaxx, and me) not the 24 Supras required to make the event float as a Supra club event. we ended up getting four drivers from NS.com (heslo, quattro, etc) to fill up the empty Supra spots.

however, i have always given forum members here first preference for this type of event, and remain hopeful that one day we will have the majority of the paddock filled with Supras.

NA Supras and other cars are more than welcome! we have had a mixture of cars out with us each year ranging from a Clubman, RX7-III NA, to high end Porsches and a Lambo in 2005. usually only 1/4 of our group has been turbo charged and some of the NA cars (Sinergy's S2000) are very very quick.

if you want in, register your interest here and note that we will be collecting a $100 deposit by September. it's simple - if you want in, you have to have paid the John Bowe team in full a month before the event. there's no pay on the day system as they need to work out in advance how many instructors they need to employ / fly over for the event.

This should be very interesting.

I will have around the 350rwkw mark and full slicks.

Managed to snag a set of Dunlop SP sport slicks 2 x 220/600 R16
2 x 265/630 R16 for $300. Good meat still left on them. Perfect size for the stock rims.

Need a new radiator though, im guessing PWR would be the go. Any other suggestions? Also, any word on these "radiator/intercooler" combo's that are going around, available on horsepowerinabox

Well, consider this noting my serious interest. Definitely want in.

Look forward to dates so I can book it off work and start making sure the car is ready to roll.

I looked at the hybrid and steered clear in the long run. Not sure why but decided to go with a rebuild on my original radiator at APM at Lonsdale. Cost me about $150 ish for a clean and new top tank. I've also bought a 60mm aluminum radiator which I'm currently getting reworked. The usual problems with a cheap chinese copy. The quality of the welding is good although they obviously never fitted this into a MkIV although I could be wrong and maybe Toyota made a special for the Chinese Domestic Market  Problems so far: bottom mounts not right, bottom tank too big, top mounts not right, top tank probably needs a trim as well. In the long run it will probably cost me the price of a Koyo or a PWR but I'll have a 60mm radiator which will be bigger and fatter  than anyone elses. Gees! And I haven't mentioned moving the power steering cooler and the tranny cooler either yet. I bought Bass' hybrid intercooler and that's fine (if I could get it to fit). Leaving the main fan as you won't get the same airflow off of electrics, leaving the smaller 2nd fan as it fits with the existing shroud and probably replacing the a/c fan but that will depend on the room I have between the a/c/ condenser and the fmic.

With 20/20 hindsight I'd stick with the stock radiator but spend the money to get it serviced.

I have a brand new core and fresh coolant/no blockages in my radiator.

Still overheats after 4 hot laps at Mallala, although its probably due to the lack of fan shroud and fmic blocking airflow.

your lack of fan shroud definitely is a problem, Matt! gotta get that sorted before November buddy

most production cars will overheat out on the track after four hot laps without an oil cooler. i would encourage people to look at getting an oil cooler if they are serious about going out on the track regularly, with a new or reconditioned radiator as a secondary priority.

i'll start gathering numbers once i have the date confirmed and locked in.

yep, no CAMS day licence required as it's an instructor led training course

the turbo guys will need a full tank of fuel and then some - depends on how thirsty your Supra is ;)

you can go your fastest when the instructor is out of the car timing you from the pit wall. as there is one instructor per four drivers, he'll go from car to car during the session, so you'll have plenty of time to go as fast or slow as you like.

the likelihood of a bad crash is extremely low. the mandatory disclaimer/waiver form that we all sign at the start of the day should cover you. there are one or two places on the circuit that you have to be careful, but they will highlight these areas in the morning briefing.

hope to see the Stika-mobile out there with us this year!
