Wii is fun if you have a lot of people around regularly ie. 4+ people...
PS3 is better if you play a lot of games in your spare time alone, better games, better graphics, better online capabilities, HDMI ready etc.
I have one. and it bloody rocks.

Since everyone is going in different directions why not an Xbox 360.

I owned the trifecta (Xbox 360 + PS3 + Wii) until a couple of weeks ago when I sold the Wii because there are bugger all good games available for it. Most games are out on other consoles and the Wii versions look shit and have annoying controls -- only games designed for Wii have good controls. Zelda was cool, and Wii Sports is OK... but that's about it.
I've lived with all 3 consoles since the day they were launched, and I can honestly say the PS3 is the better console. It's much better build quality than the 360, has a LOT more features and is actually cheaper if you compare all the add-ons required to bring the 360 up to similar (but still trailing) specs.
