It is on by default each time you turn the ignition on. There should be a couple of slip control buttons below your stereo (SNOW and OFF). Push the OFF one while your ignition is on and you should see a SLIP CONT OFF light appear on the top left of your dash.

imho it's best to leave traction (slip) control on most of the time. Supras can have a twitchy rear end with too much gas (worse when the second turbo kicks in) so you don't want to swap ends too often, especially when there are stobie poles and trees around

in most cases, the cause of an out of control situation (eg. oversteer)will be too much speed (from too much power) so Toyota's solution is to cut that power via the throttle and that's what the slip control (Electronic Throttle Control System) does. it's not perfect 100% of the time and there will be some situations where having full power at your disposal is better, but it should work for most drivers, most of the time. just my thoughts...

Seconded. Don't turn it off unless your out on the track. No need to go sideways on the streets.

I vote to disable it 99% of the time! When I first got my supra I left the traction control on and it almost killed me. In the wet I put my foot down in third gear doing 60km/hr to overtake someone and the rear end kicked out sideways then the traction control cut the power. It almost sent me into another car. Now I turn it off most of the time because I want to be able to power it out of bad situations when I need to. Traction control can also be terrible when you're turning right across traffic at T junctions in bad conditions - a little wheel spin can leave you dead in the water (t-boned from the right).

I agree with dragosani.

The toyota traction control system is downright dangerous. It cuts all power when a loss of traction occurs, which has nearly caused me to be rear-ended by a semi-trailer travelling 110km/hr after pulling out and catching a little bit of loose gravel and my power cutting out.

Turn it off always, dont put too much pressure on the throttle to send it sideways until you know how to drive.

as i said - "it should work for most drivers, most of the time" ... "and there will be some situations where having full power at your disposal is better"

i guess in Darryl's examples above, having TCS off may be better.

however, i've been in a situation (TCS off) where i was powering out of a corner (so not quite straight) and the second turbo kicked in, resulting in a big tank slapper that progressively got worse. if i had traction control on (default) that day then i wouldn't have gotten myself into that little situation... :D

There is one surefire way to find out. Find a suitable ""Legal Area"" and try lighting her up. If you get a sudden reduction in power you know you have traction control. If not you just have a light for some unknown reason. Im with Yiros in thinking NA's didnt have Traction Control.

Cheers Mate

i am to be leave that all supra's have it built into the ECU
the manual ones you can switch it off by puling a fuse out of the fuse box under the hood and all auto's have a switch on the dash
i have pulled the fuse out so i know ;)
and i have been told by some nice people from the US

Mine is a manual and I have a Trac control switch in panel under the Stereo. I would still love one of the NA guys prove they have traction controll as I have seen the intake on a NA and Im stuffed if I can see where the Butterfly valve would be. Hey I could be wrong (wouldnt be the first time) and if so I sincerely appologise.

Cheers
Darren

i have no idea about the presence of a traction control system in the NA cars, but there are two Series2 NA's sitting in Sinergy's workshop at the moment so i'll have a look tomorrow/later in the week to settle this once and for all.

First thing i do when i jump in my car is switch traction control off. Its a damn hindrance, and everyone who has been in my car for a drive has felt the stability the car has even when it kicks out.

It all comes down to the driver, main thing is u have an accelerator pedal which is progressive, that means that if u dont wanna lose control dont step on it to hard.

But i cant help myself so i always do because there is nothing more fun then when u see the revs just climb instantenously and the wheels lighting up. :)

As my brothers sms said the other day when i left his place, BLOODY HOOLIGAN :).

just looking in the wiring diagrams, the supra traction control is a separate ECU to the main engine ECU. Looks like if you have the onny/offy button there you have it - If no onny/offy button, you've saved yourself atleast a good 10kg of weight - including ABS :D

Thank you, I have laughed several times throughout this initially uncomical thread.

GEE :D

PS- this thread has also lowered my intelligence and skewed my knowledge base toward moron but it was worth it.
