Hi All,

I overheard in a Shell servo today that in 2 weeks they will all be getting a higher spec premium unleaded PULP that will be 100RON.

Now, if you go to Shells site it says V-Power normal is 98RON (big deal!) and the V-Power Racing is 100RON.

Question is - which one is coming to SA to replace their aging 96RON Optimax?

Anyone know?

Cheers folks, me wanty !!

GEE

PS- Andy's mate Steve (GTR at the SAS Dyno Day says the new independant 98RON fuel is blended with ethanol at 5% ratio and thus is allegedly known to be much higher octane eg. closer to 100! This may represent good value for money if it is true - anyone know about this also?)

i have read some things which indicate that extended use of ethanol can be very bad for your engine, heard of this before kim?

Sorry Mat, I was just using Kimbo's avatar to try to diagnose his inability to see his own avatar on his home PC. Twas me that started teh thread even if it looked like Kim due to his car in my avatar.

Ethanol in low doses can be OK, ie. 5%.

Apparently the shit is quite corrosive in higher concentrations, farks the seals.

Anyone know the exact percentage that starts doing damage on normally fueled cars?

What percentage is normally blended into the independant and Shell blends? I think they keep it to 5% max for exactly this reason ie. too many warranty claims.

ahh ok sorry gav.

on another note though, if your car is tuned for 98 octane then this wont really give you any added performance right? you would have to re-tune your car to run on the new 100 octane stuff?

you would be spewing if you retuned to the new stuff and they ran short of supply for a few weeks. ping ping.. knock knock haha.

Call me a skeptic but i think i might stay with BP Ultimate

Yeah, OEM ecu's have the ability to advance timing to make best use of the octane available. I don't think this is infinite but at least can advance to the peak allowable in the ignition tables?

If octane drops off - bad batch, non PULP etc. - they just start to pull timing until the knock sensor values come back under threshold. If things are bad enough some modern cars even go into a limp mode. My old WRX did this when the knock sensor was playing up ie. ecu shut the car down almost because it had no idea if detonation was occurring as the knock sensor was on the fritz. This is why with a bad batch, once you get proper fresh PULP back in some folks yank teh ecu power to reset it, coz letting the ecu start advancing timing again can be time consuming apparently. From what I've heard in the order of 10's or 100's of kms.

My AEM does have knock control so presumably I can set that up to manage knock like OEM. Those tables are not setup presently.

But yes, you are right, you would need to dial 'er up to tune for the added octane unless aftermarket ecu did that automatically - not sure any do though, not that I have researched this.

I now have a normal 98RON map & and octane boosted 98 map, not much in it to tell you the truth - mostly just safety margin as knock voltages dropped right off with the booster in.

Ciao,
Gav
