Hi People,

I have pulled apart my spare diff. I was just wondering if people have seen what a Torsen centre looks like.

The spare diff is suppose to be a Torsen however it seems to function similar to my standard diff on the car when I turn, wheels & the tailshaft etc. Unless my car already has a Torsen, I am confused!

Attached is a poor quality photo but I think enough can be seen.

Let me know either way.

Cheers

Should look like this mate. Article on NZ website is not linked properly.

Go to their Homepage http://mkiv.supras.org.nz

Click on Articles and go down about halfway. Its under Popular Science.

Hope this helps anyone interested in the Black Science of the TORSEN Differential.

Cheers
Darren

Woo hoo. It's a Torsen. That exaclty how it looks. I check with the EPC and the Workshop manuals btu I am unsure why both my diff operate the same when 1 is suppose to be conventional.

If I have two, then one of them is yours PK

Cheers Sam.

That's what my current one does... I better rip the rear cover off before I spend too much time and money on the spare

yours is an sz though, i dont think they made sz-r in 93 models(sz-r's have the lsd stock), but as u said, it if has one it could have been changed! do a burn out lol!

i Can tell by driving which one has lsd between my red one, my brothers and my current! it feels different when driving differently etc as u would!

when i had my car on hoist, i spun one wheel and the other didnt spin, but mechanic said with torsens that they dont work like an old school lsd would whereby if u spin one wheel, the other spins with it!

when u spin the shaft on torsen, the wheels spin in opposite directions, anyone correct me if im wrong!

It spins both wheels in a straight line but will only spin 1 wheel around a corner. The only way to tell is by removing the rear cover.

ok andy, i just went and did a burnout, my first one in this supra, i held clutch in, and with my right foot half on the brakes and accelerator revving it to 4k rpm, i popped the clutch and immediately started smoking wicked! i held it for bout 10 secs with right foot on both the brake and accelerator and slowly let go of brakes to let it spin off for 10 meters. ahaha i did it in backstreet with ppl awake so i qucikly jumped out of car and ran too see if their were 2 lines! woopeeeeeeeee lol!

2 nice thick lack lines!

but when on the hoist, we spun the tailshaft and the wheels spun in opposite directions, so if you say both ur wheels spun the same way ur current diff may not be lsd!, thats my 2 cents mechanical advice hahaha!

i loved the first burn so i did 2 more burnouts around the corner this time letting it go sideways!, quite fun, but i hate abusing it!

i guess my judgment on slightly worn clutch goes out the window as it grabbed awesome! who knows!

Torsen LSD has been sent away to be rebuilt.

First reaction by the gearbox mechanic is the diff is in good working order and the bearings feel nice and smooth.

Bearing, seals and whatever else will get changed, housing to be sandblasted and painted matt black and all should be sweet.

I will have some pic of the diff in pieces in about weeks time.
